Growth of poverty since end of Great Recession

Great article form AL.COM that shows the lasting effects of the Great Recession.

The Great Recession officially ended in 2009, but its negative economic effects continue to be felt acutely in cities across the United States.

One of the impacts of the downturn was a persistent uptick in concentrated poverty in the Birmingham-Hoover metro area.

Between the 2000 U.S. Census and the period from 2010 to 2014, the number of Americans living in extremely poor neighborhoods more than doubled to 14 million people. That’s 5 million more than there were before the economic downturn according to a recent study by the Washington, D.C.-based Brookings Institution.

That concentration of poverty extends to the Birmingham-Hoover metro area, the study shows.

Atlantic Article on Understanding ISIS

The first paragraph says it all……

“What is the Islamic State?

Where did it come from, and what are its intentions? The simplicity of these questions can be deceiving, and few Western leaders seem to know the answers. In December, The New York Times published confidential comments by Major General Michael K. Nagata, the Special Operations commander for the United States in the Middle East, admitting that he had hardly begun figuring out the Islamic State’s appeal. “We have not defeated the idea,” he said. “We do not even understand the idea.” In the past year, President Obama has referred to the Islamic State, variously, as “not Islamic” and as al-Qaeda’s “jayvee team,” statements that reflected confusion about the group, and may have contributed to significant strategic errors.”
